Potter, Clare
(c. 1925- )
   After graduating from Pratt Institute with a degree in painting, Potter entered the fashion industry designing embroidery. She founded her own company in 1940 called Clarepotter, specializing in sportswear and eveningwear. In 1960, she formed Potter Designs, Inc., and Timbertop, Inc. She is best known for her unusual color combinations and, together with contemporaries Bonnie Cashin and Clare McCardell, for creating the American Look, which was promoted during the 1940s and 1950s by Dorothy Shaver, the president of Lord & Taylor, and Virginia Pope, the New York Times fashion journalist.
